I live where there are a lot of oak trees. Acorn nuts fall out of oak trees at a certain time of year starting near the end of summer. After the acorns fall the little acorn cap that was holding the acorn eventually dries and falls out of the tree, also. If you have had a chance to look at the ground during this time you will see the acorns and the acorn caps. I usually can't resist picking up the caps not long after they have fallen when they are clean and fresh. The longer they are left on the ground in Fall and Winter they get dirty and muddy from the rain, so it's best to pick them up when they first fall. I love the shapes of these caps and like to try different ways to make earrings with them. I usually use different colors of waxed linen threads to hang and attach them to stainless steel earwires. Some times I add different colors of small seed beads or other types of seed pods in between.
